HB:BX Creating Cultural Infrastructure

I generated the program and overall design concept for this complex that rises above the High Bridge which connects Manhattan to the Bronx.  The program focused on a visual arts center that provided a cantilevered gallery space, artist studios, a restaurant, auditorium, offices, screening room and reception hall (image above).

Inspiration came from Lebbeus Woods and graffiti/street art, which inhabits the left over spaces between within cities.  I wanted the building to appear to connect/latch onto the building and also provide an opportunity to provide access to the bridge for the visitors of the center.  Street art and graffiti have been the most experimental and exciting forms of visual art in the past 30 years, so for those reasons, this building provides a spaces for both sculpture and flat work to be shown on the top two floors.
